The Islamic faith was founded by the Prophet Muhammad in 622 CE in modern day Saudi Arabia. From there, the Islamic faith expanded through trade, conquest, and migration. Merchants, scholars, and travelers shared Islamic teachings, customs, and practices, which blended with local traditions. This exchange fostered acceptance and adaptation, allowing Islam to flourish in regions from North Africa to Southeast Asia.

Today, Islam is a global religion with over 2 billion followers worldwide.

This map supports the World Cultures and Geography guided lesson Cultural diffusion: the Expansion of Islam. This guided lesson shows how we can use the clues left to us in the form of art, architecture, scientific discoveries, and learning to understand how cultural diffusion spreads ideas.
