Explorers at Work: Dominique Correia Gonçalves

Mozambican ecologist and National Geographic Explorer Dominique Gonçalves shines as a next generation leader at Gorongosa National Park. As manager of the park's Elephant Ecology Project she tracks nearly 500 majestic African elephants that roam the park, investigating their movements and range expansion. Just as important, she monitors human-elephant conflict in the buffer zone surrounding the park.

Transcript (English)

- Since I was young, my father used to tell me a lot of his adventures in the forest and also how to coexist with the animals. Coexistence is not built from one day to another. It takes time. The biggest thing that connects me with elephants is their empathy. Look at that one resting the trunk on the younger. You see that? I am part of the next generation that have to make sure that this place survives.

My name is Dominique D'Emille Correia Goncalves, and I am an elephant ecology project manager.
