On April 3, 1934, Jane Goodall was born in London, England. Goodall would follow her passion for animal behavior all the way to Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania, where her groundbreaking work studying chimpanzees made her the most famous primatologist in the world. One of Goodall’s most famous contributions to ethology (the study of animal behavior) is the observation that chimpanzees use tools. This behavior was previously only associated with human beings. The Gombe chimps “fish” for termites (a favorite food) by inserting a thin branch or stalk of grass into a termite mound, and removing it when the branch is full of clinging termites. Today, Goodall is an advocate for wildlife conservation and education. The Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots and Shoots program has nearly 150,000 members in more than 130 countries.
