On December 23, 1867, Sarah Breedlove, better known as Madam C.J. Walker, was born in Delta, Louisiana, United States. Walker amassed a fortune selling beauty products developed for Black people.

On December 23, 1867, Sarah Breedlove was born in Delta, Louisiana, United States. Breedlove later took the name of her third husband, C.J. Walker, and started her own manufacturing company. Walker's company produced, marketed, and sold a wide variety of cosmetics and hair-care products. Walker catered especially to fellow Black women. Walker was a smart businesswoman and shrewd marketer. She also established a business training college—Leila College, named for her daughter—that taught women how to sell Walker products and start their own Walker franchises. By providing entrepreneurial training for Black women, Walker expanded her customer base and helped empowered other women.
