On August 9, 1994, the United Nations first recognized the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. Indigenous people are those who trace their culture to the same area for all of their known history. There are indigenous people all over the world. In the United States and Canada, indigenous people are called Native Americans or First Nations people. Some indigenous people in South America are the Yanomami, who are native to the Amazon rain forest, and the Quechua, who are native to the Andes Mountains. In Australia, different indigenous cultures are often grouped together as Aboriginal Australians. Indigenous people in Asia include the Hmong, who are native to the mountainous regions of Southeast Asia, and the Ainu, who are native to Japan’s remote northern islands. In Europe, indigenous people include the Sami, who are native to Scandinavia, and the Basques, who are native to northern Spain. Africa has hundreds of indigenous cultures. The Bambuti, sometimes called “pygmies,” are native to the rain forests of Central Africa. The Maasai are native to the savanna of Kenya and Tanzania. The Tuareg are native to the sandy deserts of the Sahara and Sahel.
