Learning materials

This map gallery shows example student work for upper elementary students who create their own atlas as part of the activity Many Ways to Name a Place.

For this task, students use National Geographic MapMaker to illustrate their home at different scales.

Geo-technologies, such as interactive maps and geographi information systems (GIS), enable us to look at the places where we live in innumerable ways. Giving students opportunities to work with these tools will inspire them to explore and learn about places virtually and through direct experience.

Visit our Map Skills for Students collection to find additional activities that teach an assortment of map skills while addressing the spatial thinking abilities of young children and developmental appropriateness.
