Celebrating LGBTQIA+ Communities

Celebrating LGBTQIA+ Communities

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month is celebrated in June to honor the Stonewall Rebellion that occurred in the United States. On June 28, 1969, police raided New York City’s Stonewall Inn to harass its patrons, and the patrons fought back, helping to ignite the LGBTQ civil rights movement. The first Pride march began the following year to commemorate the Stonewall Rebellion.

Now, people around the world celebrate Pride, honoring the diversity of LGBTQIA+ (I represents intersex; A represents asexual; and the plus holds space for expanding gender identities and sexual orientations) communities.

Join the National Geographic Society in amplifying histories, stories, and contributions of National Geographic Explorers who identify as part of LGBTQIA+ communities and who collaborate with LGBTQIA+ communities, including photojournalist Bradley Secker, field primatologist Christopher Schmitt, underwater cinematographer Nova West, botanist and biologist Santiago Said, and marine biologist Brandon Quintana.
